Protecting Our Second Amendment Rights
I am a strong Supporter of the 2nd Amendment.
I do not support any legislation that transforms law-abiding citizens into criminals and firmly believe that the priority should be eradicating illicit firearms from our communities. Our focus should be on curbing the presence of illegal guns, rather than punishing responsible gun owners. As a 17-year EMT/Firefighter, my focus is on keeping people safe. I am wholeheartedly in favor of President Biden's bipartisan "Safer Communities Act”. This is Bipartisan legislation, which represents a significant step forward in enhancing access to mental health resources and offering much-needed support to schools dealing with children's mental health, housing, and related challenges. I congratulate everyone who worked on this groundbreaking legislation because I support evidence-based initiatives aimed at preventing instances of gun-related fatalities. This involves bolstering the availability of mental health services, promoting endeavors to reduce suicide rates, allocating funds for interventions that target homicides and gun violence in local communities, and fortifying safeguards against domestic violence.
I firmly advocate for empowering the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the necessary resources to comprehensively examine gun violence as a matter of public health. This entails a comprehensive exploration of the enduring physical, mental, economic, and societal consequences that survivors and their families endure over the long term. Furthermore, I am a staunch proponent of implementing universal background checks, and plugging the existing hazardous gaps in regulations that allow individuals such as stalkers, abusive partners, and certain assault or battery convicts to acquire and retain firearms. I emphasize the need for robust funding for the federal background check system.
We must also address the "Charleston loophole" and all measures that prohibit individuals with hate crime convictions from possessing firearms. I am concerned about the abundance of illegal firearms on the streets and the apparent lack of vigorous prosecution of gun-related offenses by the Attorney General, often leading to downgraded charges.
I have been endorsed by every first responder in Rhode Island and the United States because they know no one works harder to keep people safe than I do.
